Sailing
During his retirement years Rob was never happier than out on the Mediterranean sailing. His first boat was the Maravis and he shared it with 2 partners.

Rob’s passing sad news. Now here’s a strange one -- I found Rob through a ‘Costa Blanca News’ classified ad! It was more than 20 years ago, posted by Rob, looking for a sailing partner. I was recently arrived in Javea and looking for just such an opportunity. We met, got along well and I became a share holder in ‘Maravis’. Gordon became our third partner and a year or two later we graduated to ‘Golden Snare’ – an 8 meter Trapper 500. Comfortable and sea worthy. At one point Rob and Gordon decided to sail to Ibiza, circumnavigate the island. One the outbound leg, Gordon became seasick and Rob became both skipper and crew. Gordon recovered briefly during anchorages in the wonderful Ibiza bays, but lay prone again, very ill, the moment the anchor was raised. But circumnavigate they did and Rob got them back safely to Javea.

Gordon had had quite enough. Paul bought his share and the three of us had many fine sails. Good memories.

have a great foto of Rob, with Gordon and me. Please post it! Good reflection of Rob at his exuberant best!

Next came the Golden Snare and a change in the partnership.

We shall always remember Rob, from the very first time we met him at our home nearly 20 years ago in England. His good humour, zest for life and his cheeky smile. Whilst having such a distinguished RAF career, he always remained unaffected and down to earth.

Particular things we remember:

-Laughing and joking through many fine occasions.

-Strolls together, especially in Spain before breakfast (which included a liqueur in the local bar en route)

-Rob blowing down a tube making noises at Sampa by the pool in Spain-in fact we think he may well have invented the vuvzela..!

-The time on his boat in Spain, Rob teaching is all to steer- and his patience whilst doing so.

-Playing with him on his flight simulator. Rob landing perfectly each time and us crashing and burning every time.

-Rob giving an impromptu recital on the piano in our garage complete with candles, candelabra, excellent music and champagne!

We remember how Rob was so proud of his accomplished career, from apprentice to Wing Commander in the RAF. He lead a truly full and active life, working and living in many places, but we feel sure that England and Spain were closest to his heart.

We did not know Rob as well as others who have contributed to his
tribute. However, we feel that we would like to record what we will
always remember him for. From the first time he visited our home it was
very obvious that Rob shared our love of animals. I particularly
remember an afternoon when we, Rob and Sylvia sat around our pool with
our dogs Blackberry and Polly. Sylvia was videoing the occasion for a
disc she was making for us. Throughout the film Rob sat in conversation
with us but all of the time he was fondling Polly's ears. Never once
did he indicate that she was a nuisance - and she could be!

Yes always happy to have a pet by his side, comfort or tease them! S

Our sincere thoughts go out to you on this very sad occasion, poor old Roberto suffered a lot since we saw him in November last... We have reflected on the wonderful trips we had together to celebrate Robs birthday and Nancy's 15th/16th October... we travelled all over Spain on wonderful trips all organised by Sylvia.... to some of the unforgettable places... We had our little differences on various subjects but he always won !!!! but we didn't get to blows.... just had another drink and forgot. I enjoyed the sailing in the boat he shared.... nearly always becalmed though... He was a stalwart of the Legion and a very proud man to be involved in it.... So rest in peace Rob... we won't forget you.....

One of our fondest memories of Rob (and there were many) was our very first meeting, which was a Dinner Dance for the British Legion, and we had the pleasure of sitting with Rob and Sylvia. Rob sat on my left side, after introductions, I said to him, should he speak to me and I did not acknowledge it was because I was deaf in my left ear and he promptly took both earring aids out and said Touché
That was the start of a long and happy friendship and stayed that way right up to his passing away
We will miss him as he was quite a character and very knowledgeable we had some great times the four of us and we had lots of laughs
His guardian Angel looked after him and was at his side as passed peacefully and pain free to the beyond
So long Rob rest in peace from your loving friends

New Message

I was terribly sad to recently learn that not only Reg but also our Roberto from Benimeli had passed away. Peacefully I might add, that sunset on your blog is heavenly and no doubt arranged by Rob himself! The moment I returned from one of my regular singing excursions I walked into Benimeli smelling lilies but No Roberto....... My nana equally sad, both boys will be highly missed.

As for the wonderful Ave Maria, Roberto could not have timed it better!!! I am to put on (possibly my last concert here on the Costa Blanca) September 1st at Salon El Canor. My dear friend and talented guitarist Robin Hill, will be accompanying me and we are to launch our debut album 'Cancion' featuring Ave Maria!!! The CD will be available to buy that very night and there after on line.

I do hope to see you there as I will now dedicate Ave Maria to Robert that night.

God Bless,

Izzy sings for the residents at Benimeli and Christmas sang Ave Maria - all of us were enchanted. The above was her response when I asked for a recording of the track to play at the Service.
